Researcher

Philip is very active in the field of research, particularly exploring individuals, works and themes within music and poetry of the early twentieth century — particularly of the time around the First World War. He has a particular interest in the work of Ivor Gurney, whose work he is editing and exploring under the auspices of a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Exeter. More widely, he is interested in the idea of the War Composer, in the interrelation between music and literature, and has ideas too numerous queued up for future development and exploration.

Philip has published widely on various British composers and poets. His editions have been performed widely, in the UK and US, and have been recorded for CD release and broadcast.

Philip's research work also feeds very heavily into his work as both a singer and a composer.

Some further details of his academic work is to be found in these pages.
